Shields Environmental has committed to ambitious climate targets to limit environmental impact
Shields has been providing telecom network operators with innovative solutions for over 40 years, and now the company is committing to ambitious science-based sustainability targets.
Shields’ cloud-based inventory management platform, MarketPlace, is revolutionising the telecommunication sector’s procurement process by enabling the reuse and recycling of equipment.
Shields’ vision is to create a global circular economy within the sector that will offer financial benefits for their clients and significantly reduce their greenhouse gas emissions.
In addition to supporting clients’ journeys towards more sustainable working practices by mitigating the need for raw material mining and manufacture, Shields is committing to further limiting its impact through joining the Science Based Target initiative (SBTi).
The SBTi is a collaboration between CDP, the United Nations Global Compact, World Resources Institute (WRI) and the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF).
The initiative supports private companies in setting science-based emission reduction targets to combat the effects of climate change and limiting global warming to 1.5°C, the goal that the Paris Agreement established.
Daniel Jones, Shields CEO, said,
“We take great pride in being able to help our clients minimise their impact on the environment through our reuse and recycle strategies, and now we’re taking strides to further our own net-zero journey. Through the implementation of science-based targets, and with the invaluable support of the SBTi, we will be able to innovate and find new, more efficient practices that ensure we can fulfil our clients’ needs while working harmoniously with the world around us.”
It is Shields’ goal to play a leading role in the decarbonisation of the telecommunications industry, and we recognise that this journey must begin with our own set of science-based targets
“The urgency of the climate crisis cannot be overstated, and it is crucial to our overall business aims, as well as the Shields Board and stakeholders, that we participate constructively in limiting global warming. The robust sustainability commitments we have made will not only enable us to work more efficiently but will form the best foundations for the future of our business, our employees, our planet and future generations.”
Science-based targets are not currently mandatory for SMEs; however, the alignment of the SBTi’s goals with Shields own ESG and sustainability mission prompted the company to take action. With the assistance and guidance of the SBTi’s team of experts, Shields Environmental has been able to set science-based targets and develop a clear route map of the actions and strategies that will have a tangible impact on the planet.
