There are many examples within Shields of career progression and career longevity. The company was founded just over 40 years ago, and we still have several employees who have been with us since the start!
The best example I can speak of is my own rise within Shields over a 15-year period. In January 2005 I was 21 and qualified as a Chartered Accountant. I trained as a chartered accountant from 18 to 21 years old, and when qualified I joined Shields. I met the owner Gordon Shields, saw his energy and passion for the environment and business and was hooked. I worked in the finance team for 8 years, rising to Group CFO after Fonebak split out and was floated on AIM. I then became the Group COO for several years before taking on the CEO role. The trust from the management and owners was ultimately what led to the rapid rise. Right place right time had something to do with it also. I want to highlight that education and your past is largely irrelevant to your trajectory at Shields. Sure, your past might help shape you to the person you are today. But hard work, applying the right mentality and gelling with our culture will see you progress well within Shields. I know it’s true, it happened to me!
